Happy Canada Day!

Today is Canada Day: a national holiday in Canada celebrating the union of various colonies into a single dominion. Canadians across the country celebrate in various forms: concerts, BBQs, fireworks and hanging out with friends and family.  Modern Canada owes a lot to Scotland: Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A Macdonald was actually born in Glasgow (sadly what is thought to be his birthplace was torn down in September 2017 - although be sure to check out this 1967 clip of Sir John A's Great-Grandson returning to Glasgow to see his Great-Grandfather's birthplace ending up in a pub, of course) and many Scots contributed to the very foundations of Canada such as the railway, education, and banking. Scots also played an integral...

LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE // SPOTLIGHT: Finnieston

Since moving to Glasgow from Canada 12 years ago, we have lived all over Glasgow: from Maryhill to Hillhead to Govan to yes, even Finnieston; we lived in Finnieston before it was named the hippest place in Britain. When we lived in Finnieston there certainly wasn't anywhere near as many bars/ pubs/ restaurants/ shops as there is now. You really get a sense of the country's cultural psyche, you know? From limited edition kit kat bars in Japan (sophisticated appreciation of subtlety and niche) to salty and sweet liquorice in the Netherlands (...actually, I don't know why the Dutch love liquorice so much but to be honest, I'm obsessed with it too).   So when I first came to the UK, I was blown away by the superior quality of junk food: pickled onion chips (crisps)?! Monster Munch!? Double Deckers?! Woolworth's Pick n Mix (RIP)!? Don't get...

Christmas in Canada

In my element When I was growing up in Canada (specifically Eastern Ontario), you were almost guaranteed a white Christmas. It made one of the best times of the year, that more magical. The snow would slowly drift down from the sky, muffling the sounds of the city, and blanketing the earth with thick fluffy slabs of white. To kids, snow is an unlimited and welcomed playground; to adults, it's a nuisance (not to me though!)  Can't figure out if this is me or my brother on our cousin's kid ski-doo Yes, kid ski-doos are a real thing In the lead up to Christmas, our school would organise an all-school assembly where we sang Christmas songs together and our homeroom class...
